This week’s blog goes out to Sergio Odeith. Sergio is a portuguese street artist, but his work is much different than your average subway graffiti. He uses a technique called anamorphosis to produce stunning 3D pieces. Anamorphic art uses corners and perspective to create the illusion of depth. In order to view an anamorphic piece correctly you have to be standing in the right place or else everything will be distorted. The viewing area usually has such a small margin for error that the piece can only be viewed by one person at a time, this makes anamorphic art a very intimate experience for the viewer. Finding the right vantage point feels like you have solved a puzzle and connects you to the artist in a way that other types of art cannot. You are able to stand in the footsteps of the creator and see the piece exactly how they intended it to be seen.
Sergio Odeith was born in 1976 in Damaia, Portugal, where he first started using spray paint on street walls and train tracks in the mid-1980s. He quickly became enthralled in the Portuguese graffiti movement and not long after he began making large scale murals in Portugal. In 2005, Sergio gained international fame for his expertise in producing anamorphic street art. Enough talk because his art speaks for itself, let’s take a look at some of my favorite pieces from his website, all of which can be viewed at www.odeith.com.
